Every strong chess player can spot a fork, a pin, or a skewer before their opponent does. These three tactics show up constantly, in beginner games and grandmaster games alike, because they exploit something that never changes: pieces can only move in certain ways, and sometimes they get caught.
This article is for players who know how the pieces move but haven't yet trained their eyes to see these patterns automatically. You don't need to memorize openings or calculate ten moves deep to win material with a fork or trap a piece with a pin. You just need to recognize the shapes on the board.

They share one idea: a single piece attacking along a line or a set of squares can trap more than one enemy piece at once. Learn to spot that idea, and you start winning material without needing to calculate deep combinations.

The Fork: Attacking Two Pieces at Once

Any piece can fork. A queen can line up two rooks on the same diagonal. A pawn can threaten a knight and a bishop with a single advance. But knights deserve special attention, because they jump rather than slide. A knight doesn't need a clear line to reach its targets, so it can land on a square that simultaneously threatens pieces in completely different directions — forward, sideways, even "behind" the action. That's why knight forks feel like they come out of nowhere.
The strongest version is the fork on the king and queen together, sometimes called a "royal fork." Since the king must move out of check, the queen is left hanging. Watching for those knight-jump squares near your own king and queen is one of the fastest ways to avoid a costly blunder.
A Simple Knight Fork You Can Set Up
Picture a knight on d5, an open board, and an enemy king on g8 with a rook sitting on f8. From d5, that knight jumps to e7, and suddenly it attacks both the king and the rook at once. The king must move out of check, and the rook is lost for nothing. That's a fork in its purest form: one piece, two threats, only one can be saved.
What makes this setup worth practicing is how little it depends on memorizing moves. You're just scanning for a square where a knight's odd, jumping pattern lands on two valuable targets at the same time. Try it on a blank board:
- Place a knight in the center.
- Place two enemy pieces on squares it can reach in one jump.
- Check whether both are undefended.
Push this idea further and you get the quadruple fork — a single knight attacking the king, queen, rook, and bishop simultaneously. It's rare, but it shows exactly why knights punch above their weight in tactical play.
The Pin: Freezing a Piece in Place
A pin happens when a piece is stuck defending a more valuable piece behind it on the same line. The pinned piece can't move without exposing what's behind it, so it stays frozen while you build up pressure elsewhere on the board.
There are two kinds worth knowing:
- Absolute pin: the piece behind is the king. Moving the pinned piece would be illegal, since it would put the king in check. This is the strongest form of pin — the piece simply cannot move, period.
- Relative pin: the piece behind is valuable but not the king (often the queen). Moving the pinned piece is legal, but it usually costs material or position, so it's rarely worth it in practice.
Pins work best with pieces that slide along open lines. Bishops pin along diagonals, rooks pin along files and ranks, and the queen, combining both, pins in almost any direction. Knights, by contrast, can't pin at all — they jump, so they never create a line for a piece to hide behind.
A Simple Pin You Can Set Up
Set up a small demonstration on an empty board. Place a white bishop on b5, a black knight on c6, and the black king on e8. The bishop, knight, and king all sit on the same diagonal. That knight cannot legally move — doing so would expose its own king to check. That's an absolute pin.
Now shift the setup slightly. Put a white rook on d1, a black knight on d5, and a black queen on d8, all sharing the d-file. The knight is free to move if the player chooses, but doing so drops the queen to the rook. That's a relative pin: legal, but expensive.
The difference between these two comes down to one question: what's standing behind the pinned piece?
- King behind it → absolute pin, the piece is frozen by the rules.
- Anything else valuable behind it → relative pin, the piece is frozen by common sense.
The Skewer: Attacking Through a Piece
A skewer looks like a pin flipped around. You still line up two enemy pieces on the same rank, file, or diagonal, but this time the more valuable piece stands in front and the weaker one hides behind it.
The front piece is under direct attack, so it has to move. Once it does, the piece behind it is exposed and falls. That reversed order — valuable piece first, cheaper piece second — is the whole difference between a pin and a skewer.
Skewers need a clear line to work, so only the long-range pieces can execute them:
- Bishops (diagonals)
- Rooks (ranks and files)
- Queens (any straight line)
Knights can never skewer, since they jump rather than slide. Watch for enemy pieces lined up in front of a king, or a queen shielding a rook — that alignment is exactly what a skewer exploits.
A Simple Skewer You Can Set Up
Picture the black king on e8 and a black rook sitting on e7, directly in front of it on the same file. White has a rook on e1. That lineup — king and rook sharing a file — is the warning sign to watch for.
White plays the rook down the e-file. Check. The king must move off e8, since it's the piece being directly attacked. Once it steps aside, the rook on e7 has nothing shielding it anymore, and White's rook captures it for free.
That's the skewer: attack the valuable piece in front, force it to move, and win the piece it was covering.
Before you move a rook or queen onto an open line, scan for this pattern:
- Two enemy pieces sharing a rank, file, or diagonal
- The more valuable piece sitting in front
- A clear path for your rook, bishop, or queen to hit it
If all three line up, look for the skewer.
Training Your Eye: From Pattern Spotting to Board Vision
Pattern recognition is a skill, and like any skill, it improves with repetition. Once you know what forks, pins, and skewers look like, the next step is training yourself to check for them automatically, on every move, in every game.
Before you move a piece, ask three quick questions:
- Does this move expose one of my pieces to an attack through a more valuable piece behind it?
- Does my opponent have any pieces lined up on the same rank, file, or diagonal?
- Can any of my pieces, especially knights, jump into a square that attacks two targets at once?
This habit feels slow at first. Over time it becomes instinct, and that instinct is what chess players call board vision — seeing threats and opportunities before they fully materialize.
The same discipline transfers to other logic puzzles. Queens rewards players who scan rows, columns, and diagonals systematically instead of guessing. The more you practice deliberate scanning in one setting, the sharper it gets everywhere else.
